Keep Dunaire Beautiful - THIS SATURDAY!

 

The Dunaire Maintenance and Beautification Committee would like to announce that Dunaire will be participating in the 2013 Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 27th, from 9am until 12pm!

Since first impressions are everything, we'll be really focusing on cleaning up the entrances on Collingwood and Kingswood, but we're looking for teams of neighbors to pick up litter, cut back kudzu, and generally clean-up all over the neighborhood.

We'll meet at the two entrances at 9am this Saturday, April 27th. We'll have garbage bags, recycling bags, gloves, etc.

Keep DeKalb Beautiful is donating some t-shirts for participants, and one lucky clean-up participant* will win a $20 gift certificate from Savage Pizza in Avondale Estates, sponsored by Tony Nastri at Keller Williams Realty.

So, come on. Get out of the house. Meet your neighbors. Make new friends. Contribute to your community. Increase your property's value. And HAVE FUN!!


* To be eligible to take part in the Savage Pizza drawing, you must be a Dunaire resident, have been on time for the clean-up, and participated for at least an hour.

Dunaire Dines Out at New Era Cafe!

For our next Dunaire Dines Out, we'll be heading over to New Era Cafe in Pine Lake! Warm and friendly owners, Hanna and Giday are looking forward to our visit and they'll be serving up delicious American and homemade Ethiopian food. The menu covers all bases with Philly Cheesesteaks, Quesadillas, Corned Beef Sandwiches, and Ethiopian Tibs and Doro Wot. You won't want to miss this one!

When: Friday, April 19th, at 6pm.

Where: New Era Cafe at 4600 Rockbridge Road in Pine Lake.

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.

The Dunaire Annual Spring Cookout!

Our annual Dunaire Neighborhood Spring Cook-Out will be held this Friday, April 12th, starting at 7pm at the Dunaire pool pavilion.

This is a great opportunity to get connected with your neighborhood and make some new friends. Come by anytime and enjoy food and drinks provided by the Dunaire Civic Association. All children MUST be accompanied by an adult guardian.

The Dunaire Easter Egg Hunt!

Saturday, March 30th, is the date for the 3rd annual Dunaire Easter Egg Hunt for our little Dunaireans. Children should arrive at the Dunaire Community Garden by 4pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults who wish to contribute are asked to supply plastic Easter eggs and goodies and arrive early (3:30pm) to help set up and hide eggs! To avoid any allergy concerns, please stick to non-food items (tattoos, stickers, erasers, etc.). Little goodies can be purchased at any of the dollar stores on Memorial Drive or our local CVS. So, bring your little ones and hop on over to the Dunaire Easter Egg Hunt! We'll see you there!

PRISM Meeting - Memorial Drive Economic Renaissance Discussion - THIS THURSDAY!

PRISM (Pride Rings In Stone Mountain) is a community organization and neighborhood advocacy group that serves the neighborhoods of "The Heart of DeKalb" including Dunaire.

All are invited to the next PRISM meeting, THIS COMING THURSDAY, March 14th at 7pm, where the topic of discussion will be "Memorial Drive Community Driven Economic Renaissance, Proactive vs. Reactive Involvement." There is A LOT happening on Memorial Drive, so don't miss your opportunity to find out about it and to have your voice heard!

Do Good Dunaire!

We all know that Dunaire is a fantastic place to call home, and we know that all the good that Dunaireans do to make it so!

Creative Loafing is gathering photos from good neighbors all over metro Atlanta for their "Do Good" photo gallery and this is a great opportunity for us to show everyone some of the great things about our neighborhood.

Dunaire Dined IN!

We tried a little twist with this month's Dunaire Dines Out, by dining IN!    A small, but lively, crowd of Dunaireans got take-out from The Fish Spot and met back and Tony and Joe's home for a nice evening of Dunaire neighborliness and really great food!

This month's Dunaire Dines Out will be a little bit different - we'll be dining IN instead of dining out!

We'll meet on Friday evening at 6pm at The Fish Spot at 5053 Memorial Drive (across the street from Office Depot). The Fish Spot is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood and is getting rave reviews....but it doesn't have a dining room. So, we'll get it "to go" and meet back up and Tony and Joe's home at 3886 Bretton Woods Road.

When: Friday, March 8th, at 6pm

Where: The Fish Spot at 5053 Memorial Drive.

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check - then we'll head back to Tony and Joe's home to enjoy our Fish Spot takeout!

Dunaire Dined Out at Kathmandu Kitchen!

Dunaire dined out at Kathmandu Kitchen in Clarkston, and a good time was had by all.   The food was fantastic and the company even better!  Stay tuned for Dunaire Dines Out events in the upcoming months at The Fish Spot, Lucy Habeshas Restaurant, our local Dunaire Wendy's, and the DeKalb Farmer's Market cafeteria. 

Dunaire Dines Out at Kathmandu!

We all know Dunaire is a great place to live, and one of our biggest assets is the incredible ethnic diversity of our area. And, along with great ethnic diversity comes great ethnic restaurants! So, for this Dunaire Dines Out event, we'll be sampling Nepalese cuisine at Kathmandu Kitchen & Grill in Clarkston!

For those that haven't yet been - the cuisine at Kathmandu is similar to Indian - but generally, less spicy. The atmosphere is definitely NOT upscale, but the food is great and they've received several good write-ups recently from local food critics.

When: Friday, February 15th, at 6pm.

Where: Kathmandu Kitchen and Grill at 926 Montreal Road in downtown Clarkston.

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.

For our next Dunaire Dines Out, we'll be exploring the Mediterranean (via Clarkston)! Warm and friendly owners, Manna and Jameelah will be serving up delicious Mediterranean chicken, beef, and lamb shawarma, hummus, tabbouleh, and falafel - all with a little Eritrean twist. You definitely won't want to miss this one!

The Dunaire Holiday Party - This Friday Evening!

Celebrate the holiday season with your friends and neighbors at the annual Dunaire Holiday Party! We'll gather next Friday evening, December 7th, at 7pm at the Indian Creek Baptist Church (in the meeting rooms). Please bring a simple dish to share or contact Virginia Barber to see what's needed.

For our next Dunaire Dines Out, we'll be exploring local West African cuisine. Mina at Mina's West African Kitchen will be serving up delicious delicacies from Ghana, Nigeria, and Liberia. She's looking forward to our visit and has offered to serve up some samples first, so we get a feel for what to order. Mina says "if you like New Orleans food, you like West African!" You won't want to miss this one!

Dunaire Shined At The 3rd Annual Dunaire International Fall Festival!

The 3rd annual Dunaire International Fall Festival was a fantastic time!  The warm autumn weather was perfect for pumpkin painting, soccer games, and bouncing in the bouncy house.  Thanks to the DeKalb County Fire Department, the little Dunaireans were able to check out a real fire truck - inside and out!   Dunaireans were even able to ride horses around the community garden, thanks to the kind folks at Snap-2it and their beautiful horses. 

The pot-luck table was overflowing with wonderful homemade foods from Bosnia, Ethiopia, Chile,  and regional favorites from across the United States.  Lance and Denise provided great tunes throughout the day, and Jennifer was an awesome pumpkin painter! 

We really want to thank EVERYONE who donated so much of their time, energy, and resources to make it such a fun time.  You all make Dunaire a truly outstanding place to call home!

The Dunaire International Fall Festival Is Coming!!

The 3rd annual Dunaire International Fall Festival will take place Saturday, October 27th, from 3 'til 6pm in the Dunaire Community Garden on Cheviot Drive. It'll be a great time for everyone to come out and celebrate the arrival of autumn, cooler weather, and our fantastic neighborhood!

All Dunaire residents, and their friends and families, are welcome, and there will be a lot of fun activities for our younger Dunaireans - pumpkin painting, temporary tattoos, arts and crafts, games, a bouncy house, international music, and pony rides! We'll also have a community yard sale (to benefit the pool), and a photo booth.

And, all attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share at our international pot luck table! We're hoping to have another great table of food (like last year) to reflect the wonderful diversity of our neighborhood.

PRISM - Pride Rings In Stone Mountain!

PRISM (Pride Rings In Stone Mountain) is a community organization and neighborhood advocacy group that serves the neighborhoods of "The Heart of DeKalb" including Dunaire. Meetings are held the second Thursday of the month, except for December.

Dunaire Neighborhood Yard Sale!

Empty Your Garages! De-clutter Your den! Reclaim your basement! And make some $$$$$

Dunaire will be holding a neighborhood-wide Yard Sale on Saturday June 9th, from 8:00am 'til noon. The yard sale will be advertised in several local publications and websites to attract as many yard sale shoppers as possible.

All Dunaire neighbors should have received a postcard in their mailbox, regarding the event. We're asking that you please respond, so we know who will be participating, and what types of items will be for sale (so we can include the information in the advertisements).

For our next neighborhood dine out event, Dunaire is going to "eAt MoR cHiKin" at our local Chick-Fil-A. The Memorial Drive franchise owner, Nick, has been really involved in supporting the revitalization of Memorial Drive and the surrounding neighborhoods, so we're happy to be able to support his business (and maybe have a handspun banana pudding shake, too!)

Where: Chick-Fil-A at 5542 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain (between Rays Road and Hairston Road).

Dunaire Dined Out at Mi Casa Tex-Mex Restaurant!

This month's Dunaire Dines Out event was a great success!   We had a good turnout and great food from south of the border!  A sincere THANK YOU from Mi Casa owner, Michelle, to all who came out to mingle and support another local business.  Stay tuned for details on upcoming Dunaire Dines Out events at Chick-Fil-A, All Island Cafe, Expo Eritrean Restaurant, Kathmandu Nepalese Kitchen, and Donnie's Country Cookin'!  Have a suggestion for a dine out destination?  Let us know!

Dunaire Community Garden Work Day - Next Saturday

After a lot of hard work and organizing, and our grant money well spent, we are ready to start our best Dunaire Community Garden season yet!

On Saturday, March 3rd, we'll meet at the garden at 10am, to clean up (remove all the wood, rocks, and debris from the area) and to mark off the spaces for the new plots (using our fantastic new garden design).

* If you aren't able to attend, and you have a plot from last season, please make sure to clear your plot before March 3rd.

* If you want to save something that is still growing, please dig it up and move it outside the plots area (to the right of the compost pile). After all plots are marked and tilled, you'll be able to re-plant in your plot.

* The Atlanta Community Food Bank Garden will bring several volunteers to help build the new raised bed frames on Saturday, March 10th.

* Our new season will officially start March1st. The Dunaire Community Garden has an annual fee of $30 per plot. We need to pay Dekalb County their annual fee before April 1st, so we'll need to have everyone's $30 fee paid by the end of March. You can make out your check to Adrienne Gil or Stephanie Dean.

* Please help spread the word! We will have more plots available this year than ever before, so let your friends and neighbors know!

At 6pm we'll all reconvene at Mi Casa Tex-Mex Restaurant for an after-work day Dunaire Dines Out event!

Finally! We have a good Mexican restaurant in our neighborhood! Mi Casa Tex-Mex Restaurant on Rockbridge Road (near Pine Lake) has been serving delicious, inexpensive, authentic Tex-Mex food for just a few months, but has already built quite a loyal following. The restaurant is cute and comfortable, but not fancy, and won't break the bank.

When: Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 at 6pm

Where: Mi Casa Tex-Mex Restaurant at 4449 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain, GA (a little before the entrances to Pine Lake).

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.

Dunaire Dines Out at Sweet Potato Cafe!

For our next Dunaire Dines Out event, we'll be gathering at the brand new Sweet Potato Cafe in Stone Mountain Village. The Sweet Potato Cafe is getting some great reviews, and if you haven't been yet, you're in for a real treat. They have an large menu offering a nice mix of comfort food and farm-to-table healthy options - with a sweet potato twist - all served in a very nice, but casual, atmosphere!

When: Friday, February 3rd, 2012, from 7pm until 8:30-ish. 

Where: Sweet Potato Cafe at 5377 Manor Drive in Stone Mountain Village - Right across the street from ART Station.

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.

Dunaire Community Grant Meeting - A Day Of Service!

In the spirit of honoring the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we will be meeting on Monday, January 16th, from 2pm until 3:30pm, to take the next steps in making our community even better!

We'll be discussing the final projects from the grant we received from the Community Foundation. The following items must be completed by February 9th, 2012....

1. We need to set a date to build the 20 raised beds for the Dunaire Community Garden.

2. We need to develop Dunaire Community Garden By-Laws, and we need input from all garden members (current and future).

3. We need community members to schedule a time to participate in a training on "How to Effectively Facilitate Community Meetings."

We hope you'll be able to take some time on Monday to engage and participate in a community related event! That is what this day is all about - a day of service! 

The meeting will take place at Tony and Joe's home at 3886 Bretton Woods Road.  Refreshments will be served.

The Dunaire Holiday Party!

Celebrate the warmth of the holiday season with your friends and neighbors at the annual Dunaire Holiday Party! We'll gather Friday evening, December 9th, at 7pm at the Indian Creek Baptist Church (in the meeting rooms).  Bring a simple dish to share or contact Virginia or Carolyn to see what's needed.

The Dunaire International Fall Festival - Bringing Our Community Together!

Perfectly cool autumn weather, a very large turnout, and a lot of great organizing made this year's International Fall Festival a fantastic success! A monster-sized bouncy castle, games, face-painting, crafts, and pumpkin decorating kept littlest Dunaireans busy and smiling, while adults enjoyed the sunshine, browsed the yard sale tables, mingled with neighbors, and learned about the community garden. We were lucky enough to have Brian from Ewe-niversally Green set up a petting zoo with goats, chickens, and a bunny rabbit for everyone to to enjoy and interact with.  Our State Representative, Karla Drenner, stopped by to show her support for Dunaire, and to meet our neighbors, and we had some nice visitors from neighboring communities.  

 

This year's added twist was a multi-cultural pot luck, and Dunaireans from all over the world brought wonderful homemade dishes to share.  Dunaire is truly a global village right here in metro Atlanta! 

A most sincere THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered their time, energy, resources, money, and enthusiasm.   YOU ALL make Dunaire an exceptionally great place to call home.

The Dunaire International Fall Festival!

The Dunaire International Fall Festival will take place Saturday, October 29th, from 2 'til 6pm in the Dunaire Community Garden on Cheviot Drive. It'll be a great time for everyone to come out and celebrate the arrival of autumn and some cooler weather.

All Dunaire residents are welcome, and there will be a lot of fun activities for our younger Dunaireans - pumpkin painting, temporary tattoos, arts and crafts, games, a bouncy house and a petting zoo! We'll also have a community yard sale (to benefit the pool), and a photo booth.

And, all attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share at our international pot luck table! We're hoping to have a lot of great ethnic dishes to reflect the wonderful diversity of our neighborhood.

So, come on out and get to know your neighbors, watch the kids play, and enjoy the fall season. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dunaire Dines Out at Brockett Pub!

For our next Dunaire Dines Out event, we'll be gathering at a real neighborhood spot - The Brockett Pub in Clarkston. The Brockett Pub is rated by UrbanSpoon as the most popular restaurant in our area, so if you haven't been yet, you're in for a real treat. They have an large menu offering great pub food and dinner entrees, as well as an extensive selection of beers for those so inclined - all served in a very nice, but casual, atmosphere.

When: Friday, October 21st, at 6:30pm

Where: Brockett Pub at 4522 E Ponce de Leon Avenue in Clarkston

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.

Who: All Dunaireans, their friends and family!

Dunaire Civic Association Meeting - This Tuesday!

The Dunaire Civic Association will meet Tuesday, October 4th, at 7:30pm, at the Indian Creek Baptist Church. Topics of discussion will include the Dunaire Pool, keeping Dunaire safe and secure, the Community Garden, and general neighborhood improvement ideas. All Dunaire neighbors are encouraged to come find out what's going on in the neighborhood....we need your input!

Dunaire Community Grant Meeting - The Next Step!

All Dunaire residents are invited to attend the Dunaire Community Grant Meeting - The Next Step!  We'll meet at Carolyn Husband's home at 551 Hammet Drive, this Thursday, September 8th, from 7:30pm until 9pm. 

You will have an opportunity to provide final comments on the budget and plan for the community garden space. The final budget and plan will be due to the Neighborhood Fund on Friday, September 9th, so at the end of this meeting the documents will be finalized.

It will be very important to attend this meeting if you currently have a garden plot because we will need your input and guidance on design and timing of the fall clean up. We want to respect the harvest of your winter crops :)

We are looking forward to the action oriented meeting and producing a great budget and working plan. The community space will benefit all Dunairians, we hope to see YOU on Thursday!

Dunaire Participates In Memorial Drive's Resurgence!

Saturday's Memorial Drive Clean-Up was a real success.  The event was sponsored by DeKalb County Commissioners Sharon Barnes Sutton and Stan Watson along with State Representatives Karla Drenner and Michele Henson and the Memorial Drive Business Association, and organized by Keep DeKalb Beautiful and Georgia Perimeter College.  Nearly 100 volunteers, including a contingent from Dunaire, showed up at 8am to tackle roadside litter, illegal signs, and overgrown sidewalks.  Memorial Drive continues to improve each day with new sidewalks and medians, new lighting, and new business moving in.  And, with community support for events like this, our "main drag" is well on its way to becoming again a real destination again for retail, restaurants, and businesses.

Last night's Community Grant meeting was a great success!  THANK YOU to everyone who came out to share their thoughts and ideas.   It really is a great time to be a Dunairean! 

Dunaire Community Grant Meeting!

YOU are invited to the Dunaire Community Grant Meeting, next Tuesday, August 23rd from 7pm until 8:30pm, at Tony Nastri's home on Bretton Woods Road. 

Let’s make Dunaire a family friendly, safe, and welcoming community TOGETHER! We know everyone has very busy schedules and might not have time for a community meeting. We are asking you to take one hour and a half of your time to come and learn all the great things happening in Dunaire. You have great talents and resources to share; we want to know what they are!

We will be meeting with our new Community Coach and talking about the grant money Dunaire received and how to use those resources to beautify the Community Garden and Gathering Center.

We need YOUR input regarding how YOU would use it!

Refreshments and light snacks will be served!

Memorial Drive Community Clean-Up Day!

Dunaire will be participating in the Memorial Drive Community Clean-Up Day on Saturday, August 27th, from 8am until 11am. We need YOU to come out and see how much good can be accomplished in just a few hours!

Our main street has seen several key improvements recently, with more to come soon, but litter and illegal signs continue to be a problem. Volunteers will receive lunch from our local Memorial Drive Chick-Fil-A, "Keep DeKalb Beautiful" t-shirts, water, and opportunities for additional giveaways!

It's an easy way for you to give back to your community, improve your neighborhood, meet new friends, and get a little exercise (not to mention a Chick-Fil-A sandwich!). We'll all meet at Georgia Perimeter College, Lot 8, at 8am. If you can't make it at 8am, feel free to catch up with us!

Dunaire Dined Out at Expo Eritrean Restaurant!

Last night's "Dunaire Dines Out" event at Expo Eritrean Restaurant was a really good time for all.   We had a good turnout of "Dunaire Dines Out" regulars, and some new faces.  Expo was very accommodating, the restaurant owner, Isaac, guided our group through the menu, and the food was outstanding.  A nice evening out, a fun culinary experience, and support for a local neighborhood business.  That's what "Dunaire Dines Out" is all about!

We all know Dunaire is a great place to live, and one of our biggest assets is the incredible ethnic diversity of our area. And, along with great ethnic diversity comes great ethnic restaurants! So, for this Dunaire Dines Out event, we'll be sampling Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine at Expo Restaurant. For the less adventurous, they also serve classic American burgers, fish sandwiches, and cheese steaks, and there is a kids menu.

When: Friday, August 12th, at 7pm.

Where: Expo Restaurant at 3711 N Decatur Road.

How: We'll meet at the restaurant, and everyone will be responsible for their own check.
